How can I tell if the receiver is bad or the the actuator arm?

Who should I call first my dealer or Gi?

1. You could try a unplugging the 4DTV from the AC outlet to do a reset. Possible noise on the AC line could have locked up a Intregrated circuit.
2. If you know the correct voltage output on the 4DTV you could measure the control signals going to the arm with a Digital or analog meter.
3. If you had another receiver you could swap it out to see if it will move the dish.

Do the relays click when you attempt to move the dish? If so, connect a VOM to the actuator terminals and see if there is a voltage present when you attempt to move the dish. It should be around 24VDC. It may be a very brief spike as the IRD will terminate the attempt to move the dish if movement isn't detected. If there is, it is likely an actuator problem otherwise it is an IRD problem.

I had similar problems with mine - it worked for about a week. It turned out that one of the terminals on the bridge rectifier on the motor control board was too short and wasn't making proper contact with the PC board trace - it didn't penetrate all the way through the board and the wave soldering formed a weak solder bridge that eventually failed. I "touched up" the solder connection and it's working ok now (don't try this at home kids). If it fails again, I'm shipping it back. Stuff like this really should be caught in QA don't you think?

My 4DTV reciever is in the shop for the exact thing! After getting some good help in this and other forums I hooked up my dish motor to a car battery and monitored the pulses with a ohm meter. It worked fine in both directions and the pulses were there too so I sent it out for repair. It's been gone about two weeks so I hope it's back soon. Just disconnect the M1 & M2 from the back of the unit along with the 5v and pulse wireing. Hook up a car battery (if possible) to the wires that were connected to the M1 & M2. You should be able to move your dish both directions by reversing the wire. Also while it's moving you should be able to connect a ohm meter across the wires that were connected to the 5v & pulse. Use an analog meter if you have it, if not use a digital with it's audible option turned on, you should hear the beeps as the dish moves. Sounds strange but it works great. If the dish moves and your hearing the beeps then it's the reciever. If it doesn't work then it's the wiring or the motor.

Can you send me or post the details for this repair center in Canada? I'd like to add it to the repair center list on the 4dtvforum website.

Can u move the dish to G-10?? That's where the receiver will take
updates for all the satellite's. Probably best to clear all the memory
first, then take new updates.
