Hi.
I have a 4DTV and I'm a HBO subscriber and I live in the eastern part of Canada (province of Quebec). I'm having dificulties with some digitals channels on satellite G1. For exemple channels 100 to 111 are good and the signal is at 82 and the quality is between 30 to 36. But channels 112 to 120 are not receivable and the signal is at 76 and the quality is between 0 and 10%. I adjusted the dish position and the skew but I obtanied no improvement. I'm far to be sure that it's a problem with my dish adjustement because look at these exemples (read sattelite-channel-signal-quality) : A2-556-88-68, G9-300-72-95, C3-612-72-75. You can see that the quality is very good on other satellites. So my question is this one : Is it a problem with my dish or is it G1 who's weak ? Also is someone have an idea if G1 is going to be replace soon ?
Thanks.

Hi, Nancy,

Sorry to say, most subscribers to HBO are having the same problem as you are with the HBO digital signals carried on G1,18. Neither GI nor HBO has stepped up to the problem, but it appears to be a combination of marginal performance by one of HBO's two digital transponders, of an unnecesarilly demanding choice of "Coding Mode" for digital error correction, and of the 4DTV lacking top-notch sensitivity.

Here in Michigan our 12-foot Paraclipse with 20-degree CalAmp LNB is deliving (S=68,Q=53) with a solid signal on all the channels carried on G1,23, and (S=68,Q=15) with a touchy signal on all the channels carried on G1,18. By touchy I mean that the loss of one or two dB of signal strength, from slight mis-peaking of the dish, or from a good thunderstorm, will cause picture breakup and loss of signal. For you it may be that the satellite footprint at your location may cause you to receive these signals with one or two dB less signal stength than we receive here. That could make your challenge even a little more difficult.

Don't give up hope. It took weeks for us to find enough signal improvement to receive all the HBO signals reliably. Hours were spent on the Program Satellite screen, fidgeting with dish position and skew position, one click at a time, until the right combination was found. Others have reported minor improvements in dish alignment making a big difference.

Good signals,

See my post elsewhere on the brd on dish tweaking (Sorry, I don't know how to link to it here :-/ ). I've found that those are VERY picky. It is nearly literally a couple hairs difference at the dish in getting them watchable or not even getting a digital lock for me. Those channels and A2 have set me on a quest to 'optimize' my dish as best I can.

I had trouble with G1 digital HBOS and Cinemax when I first got my 4d. I had to have the local dealer here come out and realign my dish. That was well done and good. He did a great job. The only problem was that he didn't know anything about 4d receivers. He said that he never installed one before but he had heard that it took most of the day to set one up and he couldn't believe it when I told him that it only took me about an hour and a half to program everything in once,my hubby installed it. I told him at the time, that it's a piece of cake and it is not as hard as he would think that it would be.

Nancy,

The problem with the HBO digital channels on G1-18 (I.E. HBO zone/comedy), is that they have a different footprint than the digitals on G1-23 (I.E. HBO East/West, etc. If you go to http://www.panamsat.com/sat/beam/galb1r.htm , you will see the difference in coverage. G1-23 is Horizontal, while G1-18 is vertical. While you are within the footprint for G1-23, you are on the edge of the footprint for G1-18, necessitating either a larger dish, better LNB's, very fine dishtuning, or all three. Good luck!
