I will be moving to the U.S. soon from Canada and want to buy a 4DTV unit. But I'm confused as to the technical differences between the 921 and the 920. Are there any technical differences? Are there any advantages/disadvantages with either?

They have exactly the same hardware and exactly the same firmware. The only difference is that their unit address are in different ranges - only U.S. service providers can authorize the 4Dtv units and only StarChoice can authorise the DSR921 units.

You forgot one big difference.
The way the guide is loaded.
The 921's do not have to be turned off to get the guide
and you do not have to let it sit on one channel while it loads. *choice has a "trickle down" guide effect which loads the guide on any of their channels. Same goes for their hits.
This makes it much nicer to get the guide and from what I've seen of the 920's they do not seem to hold the guide as long as the the 921's do.

In reality, the differences you metnioned are not differences in the receiver, but in the network.

1) None of the services in the 4Dtv network currently provide a trickle stream IPG service. All of the DCII services provided by StarChoice do carry an IPG trickle stream. All of the 4Dtv receivers would pick up a trickle service if it were provided, sam as the DSR921s.

2) The 4Dtv receivers do not need to be power-cycled to pick up the 4Dtv IPG because it is the only IPG that is available to them. The StarChoice 921 owners are switching between two different networks and consequently have to flush the data from one network before they can load the data from the new network. This product was never designed or intended to be used in two different networks simultaneously.

3) Both receivers hold exactly the same amount of IPG data. But there are many more channels of data in the 4Dtv network than in the StarChoice network, so the DSR921s can store data for more days. It's that simple.

Other than the faceplate, the DSR920 (4Dtv) and the DSR921 (StarChoice) are *exactly* the same hardware and firmware. all of the differences you see are the result of different network configurations.
