A good question. One that keeps being asked. Perhaps
we need an entry in the FAQ on this.
YSP is shorthand for the phrase "Your Satellite Provider." We use the acronym YSP to refer to the multi-mergered program packager SuperStar/Netlink/TurnerVision/HBO-Direct. After the last merger their customer service reps started answering the phone "Thank you for calling Your Satellite Provider." There were just too many companies rolled up in the mergers to mention them all by name. Someone in the Forum, Mike Reynolds I think, suggested we should adopt their lingo and start calling them "YSP" for short. The name stuck. YSP is a huge organization. They have about 70% of the C band subscription market. The company is a subsidiary of United Video (WGN etc uplinker) located in Tulsa. United Video is a subsidiary of TV Guide. TV Guide is a subsidiary of Gem Star, the IPG bozos who have sued everyone that developed a competing electronic program guide. Oh, Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation also has a stake in all this. They sold TV-Guide to Gem Star, but retained a sizable block of TV Guide stock. You need a flow chart to keep track of all these corporate relationships. |
